How much does software or AI development actually cost in India?
Less than the West, but far more than the headline quote suggests. Across 47 real vendor quotes we analyzed, the initial number was routinely a fraction of true delivery cost: AI quotes ran up to 6x under the real bill, and software projects’ realistic 12-month cost of ownership landed 30 to 50 percent above the quoted total. The gap is not dishonesty so much as scope: the build is quoted in detail while the ~70 percent that comes after the demo is buried or left out.
What is the "hidden 70 percent" in an AI project quote?
In the 19 AI quotes we benchmarked, the demo-ready build was quoted carefully, but the work that actually makes an AI system production-grade was omitted or hidden: data engineering and cleanup, integration into real systems, evaluation and accuracy work, and MLOps and monitoring. That post-demo work is roughly 70 percent of true cost, which is why a quote can be 6x off without anyone lying about the build itself.
Why do quotes for the same project differ so much?
Because they are quoting different scopes while appearing to quote the same thing. In our sample, three quotes for one Noida project differed by about ₹22 lakh, a ₹12 lakh "custom" CRM quote bought roughly a ₹3.8 lakh build, and a ₹5 lakh AI-agent quote concealed around ₹9 lakh of downstream cost. The cheapest quote is usually the one that left the most out.

Ask what happens after the demo. Confirm whether data engineering, integration, evaluation, MLOps, and 12 months of maintenance are in or out of scope, and get the hourly rate behind a fixed price. A quote that itemizes the post-demo 70 percent is more trustworthy than a lower one that stays silent about it.
